11 DANIEL OCH Och-Ziff Capital Management.
Merger Arbitrage/Event-Driven Investing Low Volatility with Consistent Positive Performance
After working at Goldman Sachs for 11 years in the risk arbitrage department and heading proprietary trading and the U.S. equities department, Dan Och left in February 1994 to found Och-Ziff Capital Management in partnership with Ziff Brothers Investments. He had an arrangement with Ziff Brothers in which Ziff would commit capital for a multiyear period and in exchange Och committed not to run money for others. This arrangement allowed Och to build the business slowly and steadily. As planned, this arrangement ended on December 31, 1997, but the Ziff family remains a significant investor. There are now about 170 investors with total assets of $3 billion. Assets are at their highest level.
