Visiting Ken Griffin and Citadel Investment Group, L.L.C., in Chicago was quite an experience. Of the managers I visited, Griffin has the largest organization and infrastructure. Citadel occupies five floors at its headquarters in Chicago. It currently employs approximately 350 people in offices in Chicago as well as San Francisco; Greenwich, Connecticut; and through affiliates, in London and Tokyo. One floor alone was devoted to several dozen servers that provided the backup for market feeds, risk management, and data for the front office to make decisions. Nearly half the employees in Chicago are systems and technology professionals.
